ALGALTOXKIT F
ALGAL GROWTH INHIBITION TEST

Each ALGALTOXKIT provides the materials and the organisms to perform two 72 hour assays, using the microalgae Selenastrum capricornutum (recently renamed Raphidocelis subcapitata).
The algal cells are immobilized in algal beads, in which they remain in a good physiological state for up to 6 months. Upon demand, the microalgae can easily be set free from the storage matrix and are immediately ready for use in the toxicity tests.
The kit makes use of unique “long cell” exposure chambers, which also serve as measuring cuvettes for direct determination of algal growth by optical density measurements.

TECHNICAL DATA

Cost-effective:
  • All costs associated with maintaining algal cultures are eliminated (no investments in culturing facilities and equipment, no labor time on weekends and holidays).
  • Laboratory space and equipment requirements are minimal.
  • Labor time for testing is significantly reduced by the rapidity of measuring algal growth in a colorimeter or spectrophotometer, and the elimination of sample transfer for such measurements.
  • A low cost mini-incubator in which two assays can be conducted simultaneously, is available.
  • Shelf-life of the algal beads is guaranteed for 6 months.
Validation:
  • The standard test protocol adheres fully to OECD 201 guideline and can be easily adapted to other national/international guidelines such as ISO, DIN, US-EPA, ASTM.
  • Sensitivity of the ALGALTOXKIT assay for pure compounds and environmental samples is the same as that of traditional algal growth inhibition tests.
  • Repeatability of the ALGALTOXKIT assay is in general better than that of traditional algal tests.
